Welcome to our Kindergarten Blog!

Dear Families,

Welcome to Kindercubs, our classroom blog.  I will post all information on this blog so please check back often.  If you enter your e-mail in the box to the right, you will be automatically notified each time I post new information.

Kindergarten Information
School Hours:
Mon., Tues., Thurs., Fri                            Wed.(Early Release)
        7:35-2:30                                                 7:35-1:15

Specials:
Your child will have Music/ P.E. or Art on a rotating basis.  Check the blog for a weekly schedule.  Please have your child wear tennis shoes on P.E. days.  Beginning in September we will also visit the Library and Computer Lab each Wednesday.
Lunch:
You may set up an account for your student online.  If you need to send in lunch money, please put in envelope or baggie with your child's name and lunch number written on it.

Lunch time is very chaotic and overwhelming for kindergartners at the beginning of the year and they often do not get their lunch eaten in the short amount of time they have.  I would recommend sending a cold lunch for the first couple of weeks (then they can finish their lunch at snack time) or, if this is not possible, send a healthy snack for later in the afternoon.  Please pack snacks separate from lunch as we will store those in a different location.

Snacks:
We do have snack Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons .  There is no time for snack on Wenesdays because of early release.  Please send in a healthy snack in a separate bag or container.  Students may also finish their cold lunch at this time.  Please do not send cookies, candy, or chips!

Birthdays:
Your child may bring a special snack to share on his/her birthday or choose from the Birthday Menu (Tarver Web page).  We will celebrate summer birthdays in the spring.  To avoid hurt feelings, PLEASE DO NOT have your child pass our party invitations at school unless you are inviting everyone in the class.

Parent Volunteers:
Please let me know if you are interested in volunteering in the classroom or perhaps, preparing materials at home.

Conferences and Report Cards:
Conferences are scheduled in October and February.  However, if you have immediate concerns, please feel free to e-mail me at any time.  Report Cards will go home in January and at the end of May.

Testing:
We have 3 official assessment days.  Your child will only attend for his/her assigned time (usually a 30-45 minute time slot).  We will be testing in both Language Arts and Math.  These tests are designed to see where your child is at academically and what areas he/she may need to work on.

Academics in Kindergarten:
Kindergarten is the new "First Grade."  Students are expected to be able to read and write at the end of the year.   Beginning in September, your child will have homework about 3 nights a week.  This will usually be a guided reading book to read and/or math homework.  In addition, the Homework attache will always have a list of high frequency words, ABC chart and other resources to practice the skills we are working on in class.  I will also link a number of educational websites to this blog for your child to access.  I look forward to being a partner with you in your child's success.

Hot Weather:
The first few weeks of school may be very warm.  I encourage the children to bring a water bottle (with their name on it) on hot days.  We also have a drinking fountain in the classroom which the children are welcome to use.  Please do not send juice or sport drinks, as they might spill and cause a sticky mess!

Homework Attache:
Your child will have an attache (plastic folder with dividers) that will go home each Friday and eventually, whenever homework is assigned.  This attache will have an alphabet chart, kindergarten high-frequency words, guided reading books, other homework resources, math homework and special notes from the teacher or school.  Students must return this folder the very next school day!

Welcome to Kindergarten!   I am so excited to get to know your child and look forward to a great year!  Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
